Microplane Gadgets
Microplane – Great news for the humble grater! An Armenian Orange cake is the unlikely inspiration that has revolutionised the humble grater - a universal kitchen gadget that is found in every kitchen, be it domestic or commercial. Styles of grater vary from the box or the flat variety to the round. But whatever the shape, the result is always disappointing - a small amount of shredding in return for a lot of hard work! But six years ago grater technology completely changed. A Canadian woman, making an Armenian Orange cake, reached for her husband's brand new, hi-tech woodworking rasp out of sheer frustration with her conventional grater. She was amazed at the results. She slid the orange across the blades and lacy shards of zest fell from its surface like snowflakes. The Microplane had been discovered. Conventional graters are made by punching holes in a piece of tin or stainless steel, which produces an implement that will only ever tear or shred. The Microplane however, is a piece of surgical grade stainless steel which has many tiny razor-like edges formed by photo-etching. The holes are chemically dissolved into the stainless steel, leaving edges that finely slice any type of food - or wood - with the absolute minimum of effort. The Microplane comes in five distinct designs - a fine gauge rasp-like grater/zester, a small semi-circular spice grater, a ribbon style grater with extra-large razor sharp teeth that cut in both directions for soft cheeses and vegetables, a flat coarse grater and flat fine grater. Each flat metal grating plate is surrounded by a clear polycarbonate frame with an easy-grip black handle in Santaprene. The unique Microplane graters cut all foods precisely, finely and extremely easily - everything from citrus fruits and cheeses to nutmeg, nuts, coconut and pumpkin. The fine grater will also puree garlic, ginger and onion. www.microplane.com.au |
